Edmonton play final pre-season games

New York Rangers vs Edmonton Oilers 4-3 (2-2, 1-0, 1-1) (September 25th 2010)

The Oilers opened the scoring when Greg Moore stole the puck in his own zone, springing Ethan Moreau on the breakaway on which he scored. Marian Gaborik equalised soon thereafter on a similar goal, set up by Chris Phillips. A vehemented effort from winger Anton Axelsson gave Oilers the lead again, Axelsson ripped home a powerful wrist shot from some distance. Unfortunately, the lead lasted a mere minute, when Enver Lisin took advantage of a bad line change and scored on yet another breakaway.

An total lack of defensive cohesion allowed Chris Drury to give the Rangers a well earned lead in the early minutes of the second period. Instead of running away with the momentum, the Rangers allowed the Oilers back into the game and it developed into a trench war of sorts - both teams exchanging numerous power plays without result.

A more emphatic dump-and-chase game allowed the Oilers to employ significant pressure on the Rangers, which led to a power play goal by Moore in the middle of the period. What looked to be a solid period for the Oilers was ultimately flawed by a terrible mistake by Babchuk who allowed a three on one, which Kotalik finished off elegantly to make it 4-3 late in the third.

New York Islanders vs Edmonton Oilers 4-2 (1-1, 0-0, 3-1) (September 29th 2010)

The final pre-season game for the Oilers started with a drawn out struggle for puck possession, for any lengths of time at least, for both teams. Few chances, until Dustin Penner combined nicely with Laich on the first Oilers power play of the night, making it 1-0. Kyle Okposo made it 1-1 just seconds before the intermission, however, so the Oilers lead effectively evaporated due to Okposo's wrist shot from in close.

The second period opened with the Islanders forcing Khabibulin to make a few great saves in his first game of the pre-season, having just returned from a thigh strain. The Oilers were arguably the better team in a tightly contested period that ended goalless due to some excellent checking and quality goaltending from both DiPietro and the Bulin Wall.

After having forced a face off in the Oilers' zone while short handed, the Islanders scored straight off the draw. Three minutes later, Scott Niedermayer blasted home a point shot, while young star John Tavares finished off a brilliant rush for a 4-1 Islanders lead. The Oilers were sinking without trace. Three seconds from full time the Oilers got one back, with O'Sullivan scoring on a rebound on the power play, yet the game was already lost.
