Edmonton Oilers News

Edmonton Oilers News (October 1st 2010) "Oilers outlook before 2010/11 season"

The Oilers currently stand at 45,3M against the cap, giving them in excess of 10M in cap space. This season they have all their draft picks, rounds 1 through 7, and in addition the Pittsburgh Penguins' 4th rounder.

Oilers General Manager Morgan Kowalski was interviewed about the season, stating that he hoped to build on the positives from last season, continue to rejuvinate the roster and allow the young players to develop in their respective environments if possible or necessary. Newly appointed head coach Kevin Constantine reflected heavily on the challenges of giving the team time to form a new structure, culture and shape their style throughout the start of the season. "There is no doubt that we are capable of doing quite well, but we're equally capable of getting bogged down under unfavourable circumstances" added GM Kowalski in an honest manner. Strategically we aim to conduct relentless scouting, build a network of contacts from which we can draw information on North American prospects as well as European ones.

In other news, prospect Toni Rajala was sent back to his junior team the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL for the season. Reported talks with KHL based prospect Linus Omark has staggered to a halt, allegedly because of Omark's salary demands which are too rich for Edmonton at the moment.

The ISS Preliminary Rankings was released earlier today too, naming Matthew Nieto the top ranked player. The Boston University player was followed by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Red Deer Rebels. The top three was rounded off by Drummondville's Sean Couturier.
