Training Camp Update

Edmonton Oilers News (September 17th 2010) "Scrimmages continue"

With TEAM GREEN goaltender Khabibulin still out, TEAM RED gained a comfortable 4-0 victory over GREEN. Olivier Roy posted the shutout for RED, while Ryan Potulny was first star with 2 goals and 1 assist. Pääjärvi-Svensson, Grebeshkov and Skille also played marvellous games.

TEAM BLUE remains undefeated as they blow TEAM WHITE away with a 7-3 score. Linus Omark continued his good play from the Lightning-game, scoring 2 goals and adding a helper. Newly signed Roman Savchenko also did very well, scoring once and adding two assists. Even though his team lost, Jonas Hiller did well before being substituted, saving 16 shots from 17 taken during his time on the ice.

Reporters following the Oilers practices admit to being quite impressed with the progress Jonathan Brunelle has made so far. Brunelle was picked 92nd overall by the Oilers in 2010, and has made a nice impact on the coaches. Swede Anton Axelsson, however, has disappointed according to the press. 24 year old Axelsson came to the Oilers from the Red Wings in a deal that sent the rights to prospect Philippe Cornet the other way. GM Kowalski, however, was quoted as "having no particular concerns with Axelsson at this early stage".

Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers 2-3SO (1-1, 0-1, 1-0,) 3-4SO

Excellent forechecking enabled Ales Hemsky to take control of the puck, send it across the net to winger Pääjärvi-Svensson for the easy goal early on. Florida scored a similar goal after Taylor Chorney had given the puck away in his own zone.

A rather untidy play following a defensive zone face off saw Jeff Petry turn the puck over to Kamil Kreps who quickly fed Dadonov for a backdoor goal midway through the second period. The Oilers looked rather flat at this point, being outshot 16-9 by a more aggressive Florida team. Both teams failed to produce much on their power plays, not getting chances with the man advantage.

Coming into the third Jonas Hiller was pulled in favour of Olivier Roy. The Oilers assumed command of the game early in the period, though they could not capitalise on a number of power plays. Smid caught a break when his shot went off a defender and in when twelve minutes remained. Roy made a few pivotal saves late to send the game to overtime.

No score in the overtime period. The shootout saw Omark and Pääjärvi-Svensson miss, while Hemsky, Gagner and Potulny all scored. Unforunately, rookie goalie Roy could stop just one of 5 shooters, allowing Keith Ballard to score the winner. Oilers lose in a shootout.
