Oilers versus Flames in game 2

Edmonton Oilers vs Calgary Flames 1-5 (0-0, 0-2, 1-3)

The entertainment value of yesterday's matchup and today's was clearly disproportionate in Edmonton fans' favour, thus giving the Flames fans the short end of the stick. There was little in terms of chances and no goals after 20 minutes of play. Khabibulin made a few good saves on a Calgary power play, but the Flames could not convert.

The second period largely mimiced the first, with Kiprusoff now in net for Calgary, Edmonton had trouble breaking the deadlock despite a few good opportunities. It was not until just three minutes remained of the period that the scoring opened, a nice shot from Nigel Dawes sent the Flames up by one. Even when the Flames around it pours when it rains, and Langkow took advantage of a power play a minute after Dawes' goal to put the hosts in firm command of the game. The Oilers had shown very little offensively so far.

The Oilers came out flying in the final period, Anton Axelsson scoring his first ever goal for his team in only his second game, served brilliantly by lively linemate Greg Moore. Alas, there will be no trial, but the Oilers clearly murdered their hope briefly thereafter, Ryan Stone took a horrible holding the stick penalty, and Iginla scored on the following power play. The mortal remains of that hope was desecrated even further by two additional goals, courtesy of McLaren and Moss. A well earned revenge had been delivered on the part of Calgary, while Edmonton could rest assured that despite the abuse, they had only lost two points.

Post game: Khabibulin was unable to match his adversary, saving 'just' 27 of 32 shots. There were few positives, other than the Oilers third line combination of Axelsson and Moore who both did quite well and were +1 in a 4 goal loss.
