Springfield Falcons vs Edmonton Oilers 5-8 (1-4, 3-2, 1-2)
It was actually the AHLers who drew first blood in a high-paced first period. Liam Reddox and Ryan O'Marra combined well before serving pugilist Zach Stortini with the puck, which was nicely deposited in behind Olivier Roy in the Oilers net. Finnish forward Teemu Hartikainen equalised minutes later, breaking away and scoring top shelf. Avenging the first goal, which their line was on for, Sam Gagner was set up by Brunelle and Watson for a fine goal on a tic-tac-toe play. 2nd overall draft pick in 2010, Cam Fowler, finally showed his offensive capability, scoring from the blueline with a heavy shot half-way through the period. Just before the first intermission, Fowler scored his second, again with a powerful effort from long range.
The Falcons stunned the Oilers early in the second, with Skill and Potulny scoring two in quick succession, neither of which should have gone by Roy. It remained a 'one goal' game for almost ten minutes, before Pääjärvi-Svensson found Penner in the slot, who scored. The Oilers seemed to up the pressure, yet it was (after 8 straight even handed goals) a Falcons power play goal that came next, Gilbert Brule scored with an accurate wrister from the top of the circle. Balance in the power play score was restored just before the intermission, Matt Lashoff's shot from the point went through everyone and in. Amazingly, with the score 6-4 in favour of Edmonton, the Falcons had a mere 11 shots on goal, while the Oilers had 35.
The Falcons killed off an early minute-and-a-half of a 5-3 power play, but to no avail, Cam Fowler completed his hat trick just as the last penalty expired. Penner added another to make it 8-4 before Jack Skille scored on a solo effort two minutes from full time.
A high scoring game highlighted the fragile goaltending of both Roy and Deslauriers, while Cam Fowler had a training camp breakout, accompanied by a fine effort from Edmonton's top line. After the game, head coach Kevin Constantine had all praise, but for the forwards of the Falcons: "Skille, Brule, Potulny all impressed, against good defenders too".
